Photo Scanner App Free vs Paid: What You Really Get
Only one of the well known photo scanner apps is free in every respect: PhotoScan by Google Photos has no price and no in-app purchases, but it has not been updated since November 2022 (iOS) and July 2023 (Android). With Photomyne, scanning costs nothing and the membership is 59.99 USD per year according to the website footer. Pic Scanner Gold is a one-time purchase of 9.99 USD on iOS. Albumbox lets you scan, view, label and share an album link at no charge; several photos at once and exports need Plus at 39.99 USD per year or 79.99 USD once for three years. All prices as of October 2026.
What "free" means in a scanner app
"Free" on a store page can mean four different things, and the difference decides whether you pay later.
- The whole app costs nothing and has no paid extras. PhotoScan is the example.
- Scanning costs nothing, but getting the photos out (saving, exporting, sharing) costs money. The most common model.
- Scanning costs nothing up to a number of photos, then a plan is needed.
- The app is paid once, up front, with no further charges.
The table below sorts six apps by these criteria. Each row names what costs nothing, what the paid part costs (from 9.99 USD once to 59.99 USD per year), and where the number comes from. All store pages and provider websites were opened in October 2026; prices as of October 2026.
The comparison table
| App | Free part | Paid part | Price | Source |

| Photomyne (Photo Scan App by Photomyne) | Scanning, automatic detection and cropping, previewing in the app | Unlimited saving and sharing, other devices, website access, cloud backup (per Photomyne's article "Is Photomyne Free?", August 2026) | 59.99 USD per year after a 3-day trial (website footer); US App Store lists in-app items from 3.99 to 59.99 USD | photomyne.com and App Store id1037784828, October 2026 |
| Pic Scanner Gold | Nothing before purchase | Whole app | 9.99 USD once, iOS only, no in-app purchases | App Store id1124131441, October 2026 |
| Adobe Scan | Scanning pages as a document (PDF) | Not needed for scanning | 0 for scanning | Store pages, October 2026 |
| Microsoft Lens | Scanning pages as a document (PDF) | Not needed for scanning | 0 for scanning | Store pages, October 2026 |
| Albumbox | Scanning, viewing, albums, cropping, rotating, labeling, saving or sharing one photo, sharing an album as a view-only link; once per device up to 10 photos at once | Several photos at once, whole album to Photos app, ZIP and PDF export, downloads via the share link | Plus 39.99 USD per year or 79.99 USD once for three years | albumbox.app, October 2026 |
Two notes on the table. Adobe Scan and Microsoft Lens are document scanners: they turn a page into a PDF and do not detect the individual photos on an album page. The Photomyne store page lists several in-app items, and which item belongs to which plan is not stated on the page; the yearly figure in the table is the one Photomyne shows in its website footer.
Is Google PhotoScan free?
Yes, completely. The App Store and Google Play pages show no price and no in-app purchases (checked October 2026), and scanning needs no account. The one thing to know before you rely on it: the app has not received an update since November 21, 2022 on iPhone and July 24, 2023 on Android. It still installs; whether it performs well on your phone is something only a test on your device can tell. The details are in the article on whether Google PhotoScan is still available.
PhotoScan scans one print at a time using a four-point capture. It does not split an album page into separate photos. That is the main difference between it and the album-page apps further down.
What is free in Photomyne
According to Photomyne's own article "Is Photomyne Free?" (published August 9, 2026), you can scan without paying: automatic detection and cropping work, and you can preview the results in the app. The same article lists what the membership adds: unlimited photo saving and sharing, access on other mobile devices, access on the Photomyne website, and cloud backup and syncing. Photomyne describes the unpaid access as a way to try the app before upgrading.
What the article does not state is how many photos you can save without a membership, or where. A secondary source (fixphotolab.com, August 2026) reports that export in the free version only goes to Google Photos. The membership price in the website footer is 59.99 USD per year after a 3-day trial (as of October 2026); a one-time option valid for three years also exists in the purchase flow, with the price shown only after you start it. A fuller breakdown is in the article on what Photomyne costs.
Paid once: Pic Scanner Gold
Pic Scanner Gold takes the opposite approach. There is no free version. You pay 9.99 USD once in the App Store (as of October 2026), and the store page states that there are no in-app purchases and no subscription. The app scans several photos or a whole album page at once and separates them. It runs on iPhone and iPad only; there is no Android version.
Document scanners: free, but the wrong tool for albums
Adobe Scan and Microsoft Lens cost nothing to scan with. They are designed for paper: receipts, letters, whiteboards. Point one at an album page and you get a flat image of the whole page, usually as a PDF. The four prints on that page stay together in one file. You can crop them apart by hand afterwards, which works for a handful of pages and becomes tedious at album length. If your goal is single photo files you can label and share, these two apps are a detour. For a quick PDF of a page, they do the job.
Where Albumbox sits, and where it stops
Albumbox is our own app, so here are the same criteria applied to it. Scanning costs nothing and needs no account: you photograph a whole album page, the app detects up to six photos, crops and straightens each one, and improves contrast and colors. Viewing, creating albums, correcting the crop, labeling with date, place and names, saving or sharing a single photo, and sharing an album as a view-only link are included at no charge. Once per device you can also save or share up to 10 photos at once.
The limit is export at scale. Saving or sharing several photos at once, moving a whole album into the Photos app with one button, ZIP or PDF photo book export, and downloads through the share link need Plus. Plus costs 39.99 USD per year, with a 3-day trial currently offered, or 79.99 USD once for three years with no subscription (as of October 2026). Restoring scratches or colorizing a black and white photo uses credits: 25 credits for 4.99 USD, three included at the start, one credit per edit; photos edited with credits are always exportable, Plus or not. The app is available for iPhone and Android. Current prices are on the Albumbox pricing page.
When Plus ends, all scans stay visible and deletable, shared links keep working, and nothing is removed, downsized or watermarked.
Which model fits which situation
A few typical cases, with prices as of October 2026:
- A shoebox of loose prints: PhotoScan, at no cost, with the update caveat above.
- A few albums and an iPhone, paying once: Pic Scanner Gold, 9.99 USD.
- Cloud backup across phone, tablet and computer: Photomyne membership, 59.99 USD per year per the website.
- Albums and a phone (iPhone or Android), mainly for viewing, labeling and sharing: Albumbox without Plus, at no charge; for bulk export later, Plus at 39.99 USD per year or 79.99 USD once for three years.
- A PDF of a page: Adobe Scan or Microsoft Lens, at no cost.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best free photo scanning app?
It depends on what you scan. For single loose prints, PhotoScan by Google Photos is free with no in-app purchases, though it has not been updated since 2022 (iOS) and 2023 (Android). For album pages, no app on this list exports several photos at once without payment; Albumbox scans and labels album pages at no charge and needs Plus (39.99 USD per year, as of October 2026) for bulk export.
Is Photomyne free to use?
Scanning and previewing are free according to Photomyne's article "Is Photomyne Free?" (August 2026). Unlimited saving and sharing, other devices and cloud backup are membership features, priced at 59.99 USD per year on the website footer (as of October 2026).
Can I scan photos for free without a subscription?
Yes, in three ways: PhotoScan for single prints, Albumbox for album pages (scanning, viewing, labeling and the album link cost nothing; bulk export needs Plus at 39.99 USD per year or 79.99 USD once), or Pic Scanner Gold on iOS for a one-time 9.99 USD. All prices as of October 2026.
Are free scanner apps worse in quality?
Not as a rule. PhotoScan's glare removal for single prints is a technique that paid apps do not all offer. Where the unpaid options fall short is features around the scan: photo detection on album pages, labeling, sharing a set, and export, which is where the paid models start, from 9.99 USD once (as of October 2026).
Pick the app that matches your pile of photos, scan one page or one print as a test, and only then decide whether a paid plan is worth it for you.
