Best Photo Scanning Apps in 2026: 5 Apps Compared

Albumbox Team7 min read

The right photo scanning app depends on what you are scanning. For whole album pages, apps that find several photos in one shot save the most time: Albumbox, Photomyne and Pic Scanner Gold all do this. For a few loose prints at no cost, Google PhotoScan still works, one print at a time. PhotoScanRestore also takes one print per shot and focuses on paid restoration, and if you would rather not scan at all, a mail-in service such as Legacybox does it for you.

We make Albumbox, one of the apps in this comparison. That is why the comparison sticks to facts you can check in the App Store, on Google Play and on the providers' websites, each with a date, and gives no scores or rankings.

The five apps at a glance

App Several photos per shot Platforms How you pay
Photomyne Yes iPhone, Android Subscription required for full use
Google PhotoScan No, one print per shot iPhone, Android Free, no in-app purchases
Albumbox Yes, up to 6 per page iPhone, Android Scanning free; Plus €39.99 per year or €79.99 once for 3 years
Pic Scanner Gold Yes iPhone and iPad only One-time purchase, $9.99
PhotoScanRestore No, one print per shot iPhone only Free download; packs and plans from $9.99 to $149.00

Prices as of October and November 2026, from the App Store, Google Play and the providers' websites.

Sharing, restoration and updates

Google PhotoScan Through Google Photos No Saves JPEG files; last updates 2022 (iOS) and 2023 (Android)

Pic Scanner Gold No, shares via Messages, AirDrop or email Not in the description One-time purchase, no subscription
PhotoScanRestore Not described in the listing Paid packs and plans No detection of several photos on an album page

Photomyne

Photomyne is widely used for scanning album pages: the iPhone app has about 97,000 ratings (App Store, October 2026). It detects several photos in one shot and runs on iPhone and Android, and the app is updated regularly; the iPhone version was updated in October 2026. Scanning is possible without paying, but a subscription is required for full use, and restoring photos is charged separately. The prices are shown in the app and the store; the guide on Photomyne alternatives looks at the options for people who would rather not subscribe.

Google PhotoScan

PhotoScan by Google Photos is free and has no in-app purchases. You photograph one print at a time, and the app removes glare by combining several shots. It does not split an album page into separate photos, and it saves JPEG files; sharing by link works through Google Photos. The last updates came in November 2022 (iOS) and July 2023 (Android), so the app has had no meaningful updates in years. More on this in the article is Google PhotoScan still available.

Albumbox

Albumbox photographs a whole album page, finds up to six photos on it, and saves each one separately, cropped, straightened and improved in contrast and color as it scans. It runs on iPhone and Android. Scanning, viewing, creating albums and adding names, dates and places are free without sign-up. Saving whole albums at once, PDF photo books and sharing an album as one link are part of Plus: €14.99 per month, €39.99 per year with a 3-day free trial at the moment, or €79.99 once for three years without renewal (prices in euros as of November 2026; the store shows your currency). Restoring photos, such as removing scratches or adding color to black-and-white pictures, uses credits: 25 for €4.99, 100 for €14.99 or 500 for €49.99, one credit per photo. Credits never expire, and starting Plus comes with 3 credits.

The difference to the other album apps is not the detection itself, which Photomyne and Pic Scanner Gold also offer. It is the combination: iPhone and Android, scanning without a required subscription, improvement at the moment of capture, and a shared link that relatives open without signing up. The guide on how to share a family photo album as one link shows how that link works.

Pic Scanner Gold

Pic Scanner Gold scans whole album pages and separates the photos. It is a one-time purchase of $9.99 (App Store, October 2026), not a subscription, and it runs on iPhone and iPad only; there is no Android version. It has no shareable album link, so you share the saved photos the usual way, for example from the Photos app.

PhotoScanRestore

PhotoScanRestore, from madesimple.ai, is an iPhone app that scans one print per shot; its store listing does not describe detecting several photos on an album page. The download is free, and restoration is paid through in-app purchases, one-time packs and monthly or annual plans from $9.99 to $149.00 (App Store, November 2026). The listing mentions sharing with family but does not describe an album web link. For whole albums, the alternatives are compared in PhotoScanRestore alternatives for whole album pages.

If you would rather not scan yourself

Mail-in services such as Legacybox scan your prints for you. You pack the photos or albums into a box and send them off; the turnaround is typically four to eight weeks, and the originals travel there and back. It is not an app, but it is the main alternative to doing it yourself. Prices are per box or per photo, see the provider.

Which app fits which situation

  • Albums with several photos per page, on Android: an app with photo detection that runs on Android, such as Albumbox or Photomyne.
  • Albums on an iPhone, with a single payment: Pic Scanner Gold, or Albumbox with the three-year option.
  • A few loose prints, no budget: Google PhotoScan, keeping in mind that it is no longer updated.
  • Sharing with relatives who do not use apps: an app that publishes an album as a web page link.
  • No time to scan at all: a mail-in service, if sending the originals away is acceptable.
