Scan Photos Without a Scanner: 3 Ways With Your Phone

Albumbox Team7 min read

You can scan photos without a scanner using the phone you already own. There are three ways: the plain camera plus cropping by hand, a document scanner app that saves a page as a PDF, or a photo scanner app that detects each print on an album page. For 100 photos, the camera route takes roughly 1 to 2 hours, the photo app route about 20 to 40 minutes if the photos are in albums.

What a phone can and cannot do instead of a scanner

A flatbed scanner lights the print evenly from below the glass. A phone camera depends on the light in the room, so reflections and shadows are the main risk. Get the light right, and a phone capture is fine for screens, sharing with family and prints up to postcard size. For large enlargements, or for slides and negatives, a phone on its own is not the right tool; the overview on how to digitize old photos compares phone, scanner and service.

What you get one photo file per capture, cropped by you one PDF per page, photos not separated one image file per photo on the page
Several photos per capture no, one at a time the page as a whole, uncropped yes, each one cropped and straightened
Time per 100 photos (estimate) roughly 1 to 2 hours about 30 minutes, but the result is pages, not photos about 20 to 40 minutes in albums

Way 1: Photograph the photos with the camera and crop them

This way needs no app at all. The result depends almost entirely on the setup.

  1. Find the light. Daylight from a window to the side is best. Switch the flash off and avoid a ceiling light directly above the photo; it produces a bright spot on a glossy print.
  2. Lay the print flat on a plain, dark surface, such as a dark tablecloth. Curling prints can be held flat with two coins at the corners, outside the picture area.
  3. Hold the phone level, directly above the photo. Most phones offer a grid or a level in the camera settings. A tilted phone turns a rectangle into a trapezoid.
  4. Fill the frame but leave a small margin. Move the phone closer instead of zooming with the fingers.
  5. Tap on the photo to focus and take the shot. If you see your own shadow or a reflection, move a step to the side and repeat.
  6. Crop and straighten in the Photos app. On iPhone and Android, the edit tools have a crop frame and a rotation slider.

Each capture takes a few seconds; the cropping afterwards is what adds up. Plan roughly 1 to 2 hours per 100 photos. Prints in plastic sleeves reflect twice, so take them out for the shot if the album allows it. Where that is not possible, the guide to avoiding glare when photographing album pages shows what helps.

Way 2: Use a document scanner app

Adobe Scan and Microsoft Lens are free document scanner apps; CamScanner works with a subscription, as of October 2026. They find the edges of a page, straighten it and save it as a PDF. For letters, certificates and the written back of a photo they work well.

For photos they have one limit: they treat the page as a document. An album page with four prints becomes one PDF page with four prints on it, and the contrast setting made for text can make a photo look harsh. For a quick copy of a page to send to someone, this is the fastest route. For each photo as its own file, choose way 1 or way 3.

Way 3: Use a photo scanner app that detects the photos

Photo scanner apps are built for prints rather than text. You point the phone at an album page, and the app finds each photo on it, crops it, straightens it and saves it as a separate image. Nothing has to be peeled off a page. The guide on scanning a photo album without removing the photos covers the setup in detail.

Judged by the same criteria, three apps are worth knowing:

  • PhotoScan by Google Photos takes one print at a time from four corner positions and combines the shots to remove glare. It does not detect several photos on one page. It is free with no in-app purchases; the last updates were November 2022 on iOS and July 2023 on Android, as of October 2026.
  • Photomyne captures several prints per shot. Scanning is free; the footer of the Photomyne website names a subscription of 59.99 USD per year after a 3-day trial, as of October 2026.
  • Albumbox captures a whole album page with up to six photos in one shot and saves each one as its own file. Scanning, viewing, labeling with names and dates, and sharing an album as a link are free and need no account. Saving several photos at once and exporting as ZIP or PDF need Plus, 39.99 USD per year or 79.99 USD once for three years, as of October 2026. Available for iPhone and Android.

The setup is the same as in way 1: side light, no flash, phone level above the page. The difference is the time afterwards. Capturing a page takes a few seconds, and for an album with 100 photos on about 20 to 25 pages that adds up to roughly 20 to 40 minutes.

Which way should you take?

  • Fewer than 20 loose prints: the camera and the Photos app.
  • Letters and the writing on the back of a photo: a document scanner app.
  • Whole albums, or more than 50 prints: a photo scanner app with page detection. It takes over the cropping, which is what makes the camera route slow.
  • A few pictures for a large print: borrow a flatbed scanner for those, or send them to a service.

Frequently asked questions

How can I scan a photo with my phone?

Lay the photo flat under daylight from the side, hold the phone level above it, switch the flash off, and take the shot. Then crop and straighten it in the Photos app. A photo scanner app does the cropping for you.

Is a phone photo as good as a scan?

For screens and small prints, a careful phone capture is close enough. A flatbed scanner has even light and more detail, which matters for enlargements and for damaged prints. The article on scanning versus photographing old photos has the comparison.

Can I scan photos with the Notes app or Google Drive?

Yes, both have a document scan function that straightens a page and saves it as a PDF. Several photos on one page stay together in one file, and the contrast is tuned for text.

How do I avoid glare when photographing photos?

Use daylight from the side instead of a lamp above the photo, switch the flash off, and move a step sideways if you see a reflection. Take prints out of plastic sleeves where possible.

To try the app route, take one album page, check what is free and what Plus costs on the pricing page, and compare the result with a photo cropped by hand.
